Whatever the reason for aluminum foil having a shiny side and a dull side, it seems sense that the shiny side will reflect light more than the dull side. According to the explanations, there is no difference between the shiny and dull sides because they are only a by-product of manufacture and weren’t placed there on purpose. The justification contradicts the assertion. What then is the truth?
The dull side of aluminum foil really has a tiny bit more shine than the bright side. The shining side will reflect a tiny amount of extra energy, but the difference is so negligible that it won’t actually affect cooking. It would be misleading to claim that there is no effect at all, because cooking with the dull side out is probably still slightly more effective. However, the variation is so negligible when measured over time at high temperatures that there shouldn’t be much of a change in cooking durations.
