destined for both serious fishing and reality television

Make no mistake about it: Carraro is a fisherman first. He has undoubtedly been aware of the cameras documenting his offshore tuna fishing exploits over the past few seasons. And committed to it. Really big.

Charters account for a sizable portion of Carraro’s business; he fishes out of Gloucester, Massachusetts. Between April 1 through the third week of July, we conduct an average of 100 charters per year; thereafter, we engage in commercial fishing until Christmas.

He had been fishing on a Duffy 38 for a while and was prepared to switch to a new vessel.

Word of mouth introduced me to SW Boatworks and the Calvin Beal models—the 44 with its 17’6″ beam offered the type of room I was seeking for—and the two main qualities I was looking for in a new boat.

Naturally, Carraro is accustomed to such events and handled everything with ease while maintaining a good level of concentration on the shakedown details and loving his new 44-footer.

He remarks, “Head-to, side-to, stern-to, this boat is perfect. It’s an incredibly sturdy working platform.

American reality television program Wicked Tuna follows Gloucester, Massachusetts-based commercial tuna fisherman as they hunt for the very profitable Atlantic bluefin tuna in the North Atlantic Ocean. Wicked Tuna not only provides a behind-the-scenes look at one of America’s oldest industries but also addresses significant concerns regarding the future of the bluefin tuna. Captains follow American laws that establish season-long size restrictions and quotas.

National Geographic renamed the 2022 season of Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks as Season 1 of Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks Showdown after Season 8 of Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks.

T.J. Ott of Wicked Tuna answers questions

Fans of Wicked Tuna will immediately know the Hot Tuna, the largest boat on the program, in part because to its outgoing skipper, T.J. Ott, who has a larger-than-life personality.

T.J. WAS BORN AND GROWED UP IN THE FISHING COMMUNITY OF BROAD CHANNEL, NEW YORK, AND WAS EDUCATED IN THE COMMERCIAL FISHING INDUSTRY BY H When T.J. caught his first bluefin at age 12, he was hooked and took over the Hot Tuna from his father when he was just 19 years old. T.J. presently divides his time between Gloucester, where he spends bluefin season, and Key West, where he fishes for grouper, snapper, mahi, and wahoo.

the background. It is the oldest seaport in America. When you come up to Gloucester, it’s unlike anywhere else because you can sense the history all about you. It’s a unique location; Gloucester is unmatched.

Since 1988, when my family first began visiting Gloucester, I have spent my summers there every year.

It gave the tourism sector a boost. Not that Gloucester wasn’t popular before, but now travelers are flocking there in the same way they did when The Perfect Storm first came out. 40 to 50 people will visit my boat on any given day, and they will stay in the nearby hotels and dine at the nearby restaurants. Every proprietor of a nearby company will affirm that Wicked Tuna has had a great impact. People are now traveling to Gloucester to see for themselves why it has always been known as the bluefin capital of the world. A family from Ireland visited my boat only last year; their entire holiday was spent traveling to Gloucester to view the Wicked Tuna boats.

Other than bluefin, Gloucester offers a wide range of species for fishing, but the whale life is what really astounds tourists. Humpback whales and minkes are both present in Gloucester. As fishermen, we witness it frequently, but for many, witnessing these whales is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It’s part of what makes Gloucester such a unique place that you can catch bluefin, stripers, and see whales.

Since Rocky Neck is the oldest art colony in America and has a distinctive atmosphere, I adore it. It’s remote, close to many art galleries, and it has a fascinating history. I spend a portion of the year in Key West, and Rocky Neck is where Key West meets Gloucester. It’s undoubtedly one of my favorite locations.

There are so many locations I adore that it makes me feel awful to single out just one. It’s Sailor Stan’s for brunch. The Causeway is where you eat lunch. And Tonno is my favorite place to eat for dinner; I go there virtually every night.

How much do captains of tuna boats make?

The boat is not yours. The ladder starts with you at the bottom. The possibility exists that flipping burgers at McDonald’s would bring in a higher income.

I don’t mean to discourage you, but the average tuna boat pays the deckhand 15% of the catch after expenses are deducted, so you might not have much left over.

A man who has worked in the tuna fishing sector told me what follows:

“When I used to be in the tuna fishing business, I would give a single deckhand 20% of the profits; if I had two deckhands on board, the ratio would decrease to 15% each, and then I would take the remaining balance to cover the trip’s costs while keeping whatever profit that was left over.”

An illustration of how a tuna boat could catch fish worth $2,000 was given at the top of this page. That only leaves you with $300 as a deckhand.

Although it may sound wonderful, you will actually be at sea for three to four days and may have to remain awake for a continuous twenty hours.

Then there is the laborious labour that goes into rigging the equipment, washing the tuna boat, chopping up the bait, stringing it, and battling the tuna until they are landed. If you’ve seen Wicked Tuna, you know how difficult the task is.

The quantity of fish caught on each voyage is one aspect that will affect the deckhand’s pay on a tuna boat.

Moreover, depending on how well the tuna fishing expedition went, all of your work and effort might have only yielded a few hundred bucks.

But here’s the thing: It all depends on how much fish is caught, so don’t let my modest estimate of how much a deckhand might make on a tuna boat turn you off.

For instance, 15% of profits on one boat may be worth significantly more than 30% on a boat that rarely makes a catch.

Just how much a tuna boat deckhand can make is difficult to predict because there are so many factors at play.

When the identical issue was posed on a well-known fishing forum, the following is what a tuna boat captain responded:

It can depend on where you fish along the coast, how big the tuna boat is, whether you’re fishing inshore or offshore, what time of year it is, and how skilled the captain, so it’s not an easy question to answer. You could very well earn anything between $10,000 and $100,000 a year depending on the different factors.
