The treatment of lobsters, how? On our own docks, we unload and grade our lobsters according to size and quality, and we only choose the best to export to you! Your lobsters are kept for a brief period of time in our spotless big salt water pools and are maintained at a constant 38-40 degrees’ to imitate their natural environment on the ocean floor after being offloaded and sorted by neighborhood fishermen. For your transportation, the lobsters are stabilized thanks to this! Our lobsters are handled with extreme care, and it shows!
When are the lobsters selected for transportation to me? Your lobsters stay in the water once we receive your order and until they are plucked out to be shipped! Is the Sea of Galilee home to lobsters?
Many of the fishing boats in Galilee actually sell lobsters and crabs right off the wharf as they return each afternoon with a cargo full of fresh seafood. That’s pretty much as recent as it gets! Due to its rarity, one fortunate crustacean will not be served at the dinner table.
On August 14th, as the “Kristen J” fishing boat arrived back at the docks, Captain Mark Jones proudly presented his rare catch. When found, blue lobsters can range in brightness, but Capt. Jones’ specimen was an incredibly vivid blue.
Only one in two million lobsters, according to oceanographers, are blue. A genetic flaw enables the lobster to manufacture an excessive amount of a specific protein, which is what gives the lobster its distinctive color.
It is a real pleasure to visit the fishing piers in Point Judith, Galilee, and see the fishing workers in action as they are returning from the sea. Galilee’s port is a genuine, active New England fishing community. Galilee also has a wide variety of seafood restaurants and shops, and Roger Wheeler and Salty Brine State Beaches are nearby.
What kind of vessel is required for lobstering?
It’s not surprising that boatbuilders have been ready to refer to their products as “lobster yachts,” regardless of their design credentials, given that the traditional lobster boat has been compared to the “pickup truck of the Maine coast.”
With a few exceptions, however, none of the powerboats used for recreational purposes and referred to as “lobster yachts,” including those that assert to be “inspired by” or “descendants of” lobster boats, even remotely resemble true lobster boats. Most only have one thing in common: they all float. One wag said that referring to one as a lobser boat is equivalent to referring to a Honda Gold Wing motorcycle as a Harley simply because it is large and has two wheels.
Since lobster boats have been used by fisherman to tend their lobster traps in the Northeast for decades, these boats have been designed and improved to fulfill their needs.
The traditional lobster boat from Maine or the Down East is a semi-displacement craft distinguished by a springy sheerline that sweeps forward from a high, flaring bow to topsides with little freeboard aft and frequently significant tumblehome at the stern.
The low freeboard makes it simpler for the lobsterman to carry his traps onboard, while the high bow is designed to shoulder aside the seas. The pilothouse is frequently open on one side so that a single crew member may operate the traps from the helm while still being protected from the elements. The single engine is often placed well front to provide a flat shaft angle, and the cockpit extends for more than half the length of the boat.
But underwater is where the main distinction between authentic and fake lobster boats lies. Real lobster boats have spherical bottoms without strong chines and a noticeable keel that shields the propeller. In order to handle head seas and prevent the bow from drifting away from the breeze while the traps are hauled aboard, the forefoot is typically deep.
A classic lobster boat’s hull immediately flattens aft, giving it a good turn of speed when dashing to or from the traps and some measure of stability. On this flat surface, the majority of lobster boats go bow-high, which is quick and efficient, and the deadrise at the transom is frequently a shallow 2 to 3 degrees. It is hardly unexpected that a 34-footer has only a 9-foot beam because traditional lobster boats are also considerably narrower than recreational powerboats.
Each variation of the lobster boat has a name, including Jonesport, Beals Island, Hampton, Cape Islander, and more. Of course, there are as many “breeds” of lobster boats as there are harbors on the Down East coast.
Whether or whether a lobster boat is “built-down” or “skeg-built” is one distinguishing characteristic. This describes how skeg-built boats are constructed, with the hull fitting into the skeg perpendicularly as if it were an afterthought. The hulls of built-down lobster boats curve into the skeg rather than severing it at an acute angle. Skeg-built boats are typically faster, whereas built-down boats are better at handling strong weather and may carry more weight. Built-down hulls are found to the west of Southwest Harbor and skeg-built hulls to the east, suggesting that the problem is a regional design issue. Oh, right.
The traditional lobster boat is very different from what are being referred to as lobster yachts for recreational usage, regardless of how the hull is constructed or what name she goes by.
What do you call a boat that catches lobsters?
The phrase “lobster boat” immediately conjures up pictures of tough vessels and even tougher workers grappling traps on a rough sea. On many modern “lobster boats,” however, the only lobster wrangling takes place on a plate.
There are now two types of lobster boats. The first version was created especially for the lobster trade off the coast of Maine. Then there are “lobster lights” for recreational purposes, often known as lobster yachts. Although modified to be less work-focused and more play-oriented, these pure leisure boats substantially mimic the appearance of working lobster boats.
Whether we realize it or not, the majority of us are familiar with a working lobster boat’s profile. The Orca from Jaws, arguably the most renowned boat in pop culture, is a lobster boat that has been modified. The creaking Orca was built in the style of a traditional lobster boat, albeit one that was far past its prime. The addition of the tall bowsprit was done for dramatic effect.
The traditional Maine or Downeast working boats were designed with the demands of lobstering in mind. The distance between the sea and the deck is low at the stern to make it easier to load lobster traps onboard, and the boat has a high bow for fighting off big waves. Their enclosed, slightly forward all-weather pilothouses leave an extended, open cockpit for the working crew and traps. The phrase “pickup trucks of the Maine coast” refers to their hulls’ ability to withstand harsh conditions and large loads.
The leisurely lobster yachts of today are very different from their hard-working predecessors. They adopted the sheer line of a high bow swooping down to a low freeboard at the stern because it is so incredibly appealing even though the non-working version has no need for the heavy weather or load features. The comfortable, enclosed pilothouse was retained in the pleasure model, but it was enlarged to provide greater living area for handling store-bought lobster. As a result, modern lobster yachts have less “work” space in the cockpit but still have enough of space for passengers to relax and enjoy classy beverages while cruising the waterways.
Recreational boaters have previously converted working boats into pleasure craft (think trawlers).

One of the greatest times of the year to purchase live lobsters is usually in May. Since the demand from summer resorts hasn’t yet materialized, the supplies are excellent. After the cold weather months, lobsters are often at their firmest and meatiest.
How far out to sea must you be to catch lobster?
In order to stay in the somewhat warmer offshore waters, lobsters typically move offshore in the fall and winter. In order to molt, they move inshore in the late spring and summer. Although they can be taken offshore up to 190 miles from the coast, lobsters are more common in coastal waters, according to the ASFMC.
