Applegate bacon is made by who?

AUSTIN, Minn. (AP)

With the growing trend for organic and natural products in the food sector, particularly in the meat and poultry market, one company is capitalizing on the trend. When it comes to organic and natural bacon, Applegate Natural & Organic Meats is at the forefront. Hormel Foods Corp., Austin, Minnesota, which bought Applegate three years ago and runs it as an independent brand, is also profiting from the shift in consumer food tastes.

With all of the meats Applegate sells, including bacon, the company offers two product lines: natural and organic. “We’re the No. 1 natural and organic beef brand, and that holds true in the bacon area as well,” says Leah Sbriscia, Applegate’s assistant product manager in Bridgewater, New Jersey. The company, which is 31 years old, was started as an independent company in 1987 with the goal of producing beef products that are as natural as possible. Hormel purchased Applegate Farms for $775 million in the summer of 2015. Applegate, now a Hormel brand, had yearly sales of almost $340 million three years ago. Applegate now employs 133 people, but this figure is expected to rise.

Kirkland bacon comes from where?

Sarah George, a corporate buyer for Costco Wholesale, had to make some personal sacrifices in order to find the ultimate premium, presliced, precooked bacon.

She recalls, “I was in ten bacon facilities seeking for someone making absolutely quality cooked bacon.” “On the plane, I think the individuals I sat next to were a little wary of me. The odor of cigarette smoke lingers in your hair.”

Costco appealed to its current bacon supplier, Hormel, for help since it couldn’t locate a high-quality precooked bacon. Hormel co-branded the resulting product. Precooked bacon is already available from Hormel, although Costco’s is cut thicker.

“I believe the most important aspect of that product was to create one that could be served on a plate, therefore it’s thick-sliced. It was made to be large enough on the plate to resemble a real piece of bacon “George said.

According to Frank Dell, one of the panelists, the judges were impressed by the flavor and presentation. “We were concerned that if it was precooked and just warmed up, it wouldn’t have the same fresh flavor. It basically tasted like raw bacon had been fried.”

In June 2004, Costco released the product in a 1-pound box for $8.99. It’s displayed next to the milk and eggs in display-ready boxes in stand-up coolers.

Apart from tasting, Costco didn’t do anything unusual to promote the bacon, as it usually does with new goods. George explained, “We just rolled everything out.” “And it was purchased.”

Bacon was able to overcome a few obstacles thanks to sampling. It’s not a product that people are used to seeing in a premium version, and it costs more than conventional bacon (despite the fact that it doesn’t shrink after cooking). “I believe they’ll be lot more willing to purchase again once they understand it actually did translate,” George added.
