It’s challenging to distinguish apart in the crowded industry of fast food restaurants because many of them provide comparable items. But Wendy’s rendition is so delicious that you’ll come back repeatedly simply to get more.

This breakfast meal is so delicious that it almost defies logic. By itself, the biscuit is nothing unusual because it is the same biscuit that can be found on other Wendy’s breakfast items. The sausage gravy is the key that unlocks all the taste. The combination of pieces of sausage in white gravy at Wendy’s is a home run. In contrast to other sausage gravy, this one has a sufficient amount of additional heat to maintain your interest and keep your taste senses dancing.

The fact that Wendy’s serves this breakfast dish with more than enough gravy is another plus. You’ll still have more gravy to consume after the biscuit is gone. Fortunately, you won’t think twice about using your fingers to slurp up every last bit of gravy.

Working in the food service industry creates special fraternal relationships that, to paraphrase Dickens, make it “the best of times… [and] the worst of times.” Because of this, I have memories of my teenage years spent working at Wendy’s that could be deemed abnormally fond. On the weekends when I was due to open, I remember forcing my incredibly understanding mother to wake up way too early after picking me up at midnight the night before. Even though the brand at the time only served lunch, we still had to arrive at the location by 7 or 8 AM to prepare for the 10:30 service. This included chopping lettuce and slicing tomatoes for the day’s sandwiches, putting together salads, filling prep pans, and other tasks.

After working a late-night drive-through shift the night before, it was a short straw shift, but those of us doing back-to-backs found a way to make it better: We added breakfast to Wendy’s menu.

While someone else put a sleeve of bacon in the deep fryer rather than the warming drawer it is usually crisped in, someone else would bring in a carton of eggs and warm the flat-top grill with over-easies. We would use the first slices of American of the day to construct bacon, egg, and cheese sandwiches on toasted junior sandwich buns, which we would season with tiny sachets of black pepper. We started whistling while working the next thing you know.

We must have been decades ahead of our time because the chain now offers a breakfast menu that is much more extensive than anything we could have ever jimmy-rigged. The fried egg was properly done and the edges had some of that beautiful, crispy browning. The yolk was cooked through and a little powdered on this occasion for food safety reasons. The egg in the sandwich was discernible, and it worked well with the sausage patty.

American cheese often has a moderate flavor and pairs well with a variety of foods. In this case, the cheese and sausage went well together and added some creaminess and extra salt to the sandwich.

With its basic combination of sausage, egg, and American cheese, Wendy’s Classic Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Sandwich was a passably satisfying offering. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy the breakfast roll and thought it was too dense and chewy, but not quite as chewy as an English muffin. It it just seemed like a mediocre loaf of bread. The croissant bun or biscuit from Wendy is always preferable than the breakfast roll in my opinion.

McDonald’s said that has stopped using pink slime in its burgers as of the end of August. Senior director of quality systems Todd Bacon made the following statement on the company’s website:

“We decided to stop using ammonia-treated cattle in our hamburgers from the beginning of 2011. Since August of last year, this product has been absent from our distribution network. This choice was made as a result of our attempts to harmonize our global criteria for where we get our beef globally.”

We don’t know what other substances (or chemicals) you’ll ingest if you visit the Golden Arches, but at least you can be sure you won’t be eating pink slime.

Only 250 calories are contained in their ordinary hamburger, which also includes a standard bun, ketchup, mustard, pickles, and onions. This is quite low compared to their 540-calorie Big Mac.

1. McDonald’s

Thankfully for consumers, it appears that the fast food juggernaut has joined McDonald’s in giving up the ammonium-treated beef trimmings.

This flame-broiled patty on a sesame-seed bun with pickles, ketchup, and mustard is less than 300 calories. For only 10 extra calories, you may add lettuce, tomato, and onion to create a wonderful burger. But be careful to skip the mayo because it adds an additional 160 calories.

3. Wendy’s

Wendy’s directly states on their website that their beef is “100% pure beef from North American grown cattle, contains no fillers, no additives, no flavor boosters, and no ammonia treatments,” yet not referring to the product as “pink slime.”

You wouldn’t think a Cheesy Cheddarburger from Wendy’s would be one of the healthier burger options on the menu given how much cheese it contains, yet it just has 300 calories. It tastes good, especially when topped with a wonderful cheddar cheese sauce and one piece of American cheese. For only 10 additional calories, add lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles.

Jack in the Box, no. 4

Another fast food restaurant, Jack in the Box, claims to have stopped using pink-slime-contaminated cattle and writes on its website, “We only utilize 100% pure beef in our hamburgers.”

  • The least harmful choice is: There are 281 calories, 10 grams of fat, 4 grams of saturated fat, 33 grams of carbs, and 13 grams of protein in one Hamburger Deluxe without mayo-onion sauce.

The mayo-onion sauce from Jack in the Box is great, but removing this 44-calorie addition makes their Hamburger Deluxe rank higher on our ranking. This burger option is one of their healthier sandwich alternatives and is low in saturated fat compared to other fast food options.

Fifth Chick-fil-A

Stick to fast food restaurants like Chick-fil-A if you really want to avoid the pink slime controversy. Even if they don’t have beef burgers on the menu, you can still indulge in anything else knowing that there aren’t any pink slime condiments in their chicken burgers, for example.

Even though there isn’t any beef served at this fast food restaurant, you can still have a chicken burger guilt-free and slime-free.
